SUMMARY:XEKO Level 2 Physical Intervention Course
DESCRIPTION:XEKO Level 2 Physical Intervention Programme Guide\nThe XEKO Le
vel 2 Physical Intervention Programme is a dynamic 2-day training course de
signed for people who want practical\, effective and professional physical-
intervention skills that remain consistent with safer intervention principl
es and do not breach SIA guidance. The programme is approved by the SIA for
Door Supervisors\, while also being highly relevant for professionals in l
 aw enforcement\, healthcare\, lone-working roles\, hospitality\, retail and
any other setting where conflict may occur and staff may need to protect t
hemselves or others.\nProgramme objective\nThe objective behind the design
of this programme is simple: to use effective techniques that inspire confi
dence in the operative while remaining teachable\, realistic and responsibl
 e. Every technique within the system is intended to be trainable to a high
standard without causing injury during practice\, making the programme suit
able for repeated drilling\, skill development and pressure testing in a pr
ofessional training environment.\nThe system is designed to be widely appli
cable to operators of different shapes\, sizes and physical abilities. It u
ses clear gross motor movements and simple decision-making principles so th
at techniques remain functional under pressure\, while also teaching the co
ntextual side of intervention so learners understand when\, why and how a t
actic should be applied\, not just what the movement looks like.\nThe progr
amme is also deliberately adaptable. The core system links directly to more
advanced material taught on higher-level courses\, so if a situation devel
ops beyond the scope of a basic response\, learners already have a clear fo
undation that connects naturally to more advanced options and progression p
athways.\nWho the course is for\nThis programme is ideal for learners who m
ay need to manage tension\, aggression\, unwanted contact or fast-moving in
cidents in a lawful\, confident and proportionate way. While it aligns stro
ngly with the needs of Door Supervisors and reflects principles recognised
in SIA-linked physical intervention training\, the practical value of the c
ourse extends well beyond the private security sector into other public-fac
ing and higher-risk roles where personal safety\, teamwork and de-escalatio
n matter every day.\nCandidates must be fit and well enough to take part in
a physically challenging course. Although the training is delivered in a r
elatively controlled environment\, techniques will be pressure-tested throu
gh varied applications so learners can understand what works\, build confid
ence under stress and develop realistic skills rather than purely theoretic
al knowledge.\nTraining approach\nThe course is built around effectiveness\
, safety and professionalism. Throughout the programme\, the emphasis remai
ns on reducing risk and harm\, using the least forceful intervention practi
cable\, avoiding dangerous methods and keeping communication and de-escalat
ion at the centre of every response.\nThis means the programme is not about
aggression or unnecessary force. Instead\, it focuses on practical respons
es that can be justified\, applied responsibly and adapted to real workplac
e situations\, while staying consistent with safer physical intervention pr
inciples such as teamwork\, monitoring wellbeing\, early de-escalation and
avoiding high-risk methods including neck restraints and other techniques t
hat may affect breathing or circulation.\nCourse structure\nThe system is b
roken into bite-size chunks across five topics\, allowing learners to build
competence step by step without being overloaded. This structure helps can
didates absorb the material more effectively\, revisit key ideas often and
understand how the different parts of the system connect together in real i
ncidents.\n1. Foundation\nThe Foundation phase underpins everything else ta
ught on the course. This section develops the essential base skills that ma
ke all later techniques more effective\, including stance\, posture and pos
itioning\, evasive footwork\, defence against strikes and basic controls.\n
This part of the programme is particularly important because sound foundati
 ons improve balance\, awareness\, distance management and decision-making u
nder pressure. Learners are shown how small improvements in movement and po
sitioning can make a major difference in staying safer and taking control e
arly.\n2. Escorting Solo\nThis topic teaches the operative how to prompt\,
guide and escort an individual safely when working alone. The focus is on a
chieving control with professionalism\, using both non-restrictive and rest
rictive methods where appropriate\, while keeping risk and harm as low as p
ossible.\nLearners build confidence in moving people safely\, maintaining p
osture and balance\, and using positioning rather than force wherever possi
ble. As with all elements of the course\, communication and de-escalation r
emain central to how the techniques are applied.\n3. Escorting Coordinated\
nEscorting Coordinated develops the same principles further by teaching lea
rners how to work with another operative. This includes coordinated applica
tions\, leadership\, timing\, positioning and teamwork so that staff can ac
t together in a more controlled and efficient way when a solo response is n
ot sufficient.\nThis closely reflects safer intervention guidance that stre
sses communication\, team roles and the importance of one person taking a l
ead when more than one staff member is involved in an intervention.\n4. Bre
aking up a fight\nThis part of the course focuses on quickly and effectivel
y interrupting violence\, separating individuals and establishing control i
n a way that reduces the chance of the situation escalating further. Learne
rs are taught how to enter\, position\, stabilise and manage the incident s
afely\, while continuing to assess risk and communicate throughout.\nThe em
phasis is on decisive but proportionate action\, followed by immediate effo
rts to calm\, separate and de-escalate. This supports the wider principle t
hat physical intervention should be used as a last resort and then reduced
at the earliest safe opportunity.\n5. Disengagements and escapes\nThe final
topic covers responses to some of the most common grabs and holds encounte
red in real conflict situations. This includes wrist grabs\, clothing grabs
\, chokes and headlocks\, with training focused on effective escape\, regai
ning safer positioning and making good decisions immediately afterwards.\nW
hen escaping wrist grabs and clothing grabs\, the objective is to disengage
and use space to create time. For chokes and headlocks\, operatives are ta
ught to transition into familiar escorting techniques so the response links
directly back into the wider system rather than relying on isolated moveme
nts.\nDe-escalation throughout\nConflict management is not treated as a sep
arate afterthought on this course. It is woven throughout the full 2-day pr
ogramme so that learners continually develop the habit of assessing behavio
ur early\, communicating clearly and using verbal and non-verbal strategies
to calm situations before they become physical.\nThis is important because
physical intervention should always be a last resort. Strong interpersonal
skills\, calm communication and early de-escalation are among the most eff
ective ways to reduce risk to staff\, subjects and bystanders\, and they re
main central to professional practice across security and other frontline s
 ectors.\nWhat learners can expect\nLearners can expect a hands-on\, engagin
g and demanding course that is designed to build real confidence\, not just
tick a box. The practical nature of the programme helps candidates underst
and how techniques work under pressure\, while the structured coaching appr
oach keeps the training supportive\, safe and enjoyable.\nBy the end of the
course\, successful learners will have a clearer understanding of how to m
 ove better\, control space\, manage contact safely\, escort effectively\, b
reak up fights more confidently and respond more effectively to confrontati
on. Just as importantly\, they will have reinforced the mindset that the be
st outcome is always the one that resolves conflict with the lowest possibl
e level of risk and harm.
